Alberto Rodriguez, better known to wrestling fans as Alberto Del Rio, was born on May 25, 1977 in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. He is the son of the famous luchador Dos Caras. He is also the nephew of Mil Máscaras and Sicodelico.
Prior to entering the world of professional wrestling, he was a member of the Mexican national team in Greco-Roman wrestling. He had hoped to compete in the 2000 Olympics. Unfortunately, Mexico wound up not sending any wrestlers to compete in the Sydney Olympics.
Dos Caras Junior:
After his Olympic dreams were ended in 2000, Alberto followed his family's footsteps into the world of lucha libre. The name Dos Caras translates into “two faces”, which represents the double-headed eagle which adorned his mask. He not only wore a mask with that symbol in the wrestling ring, he also competed in the world of Mixed Martial Arts while wearing a modified version of the mask. Over the course of nine years, he obtained a record of 9-5. Two of those losses happened while he was in Pride Fighting Championship, one of the most prestigious organizations in the world of MMA.
In 2007, he ended the nearly three-year CMLL World Heavyweight Championship reign of Universo 2000. He held that honor for over 500 days before losing the title to Ultimo Guerrero. During his title reign, reports came out that he wrestled a try-out match for the WWE. That led to a storyline where he eventually turned from a tecnico into a rudo. This was shocking because of his beloved family legacy.
Alberto Del Rio:
In the Summer of 2010, Alberto Del Rio made his debut on WWE television by appearing in multiple vignettes as a Mexican aristocrat. In his first televised match, he defeated Rey Mysterio. A few months later, he won the Royal Rumble which led to him fighting Edge for the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania XXVII. While his cashing in of the title shot he earned at the Royal Rumble didn't turn out as planned, he would quickly recover. In July of 2011, he won the RAW Money in the Bank Ladder Match. He cashed in his title shot at SummerSlam the following month after WWE Champion CM Punk battled John Cena and then was attacked by Kevin Nash. All it took was one kick for Alberto Del Rio to achieve his destiny and win the WWE Championship.
Regaining the WWE Championship:
Alberto Del Rio's first title reign ended at Night of Champions when he lost to John Cena in his first defense of the title on PPV. Two weeks later, he beat John Cena and CM Punk in a Hell in a Cell Match to regain the title.
