The Five Best WrestleMania Celebrities

By , About.com Guide

Over the years, close to a hundred celebrities have been a part of WrestleMania. This is not a list of who the most famous celebrities are but the celebrities that did the best job at the event. By that I mean which celebrities were able to make a mainstream audience care about professional wrestling and were responsible for making the event and the wrestling business bigger.

1. Mr. T

Mr. T took part in the main event at the first WrestleMania and was part of the New York main event at WrestleMania 2. Without Mr. T, it is arguable if anyone outside of hardcore wrestling fans would have cared about WresteMania. In 1985, Mr. T was one of the most popular celebrities in the country due to his roles in Rocky III and The A Team. As part of the promotion of the event, Hulk Hogan and Mr. T hosted Saturday Night Live the night before the big event.

2. Donald Trump

Donald Trump is the celebrity that has been the most involved in WrestleMania. His Trump Plaza was the host of WrestleMania IV and WrestleMania V. These events marked the first time that the WWE did things leading up to the big show in local area. These efforts helped spawn what is now known as the WrestleMania Fan Axxess Tour. He also was involved in an in-ring segment at WrestleMania 23. He put his hair on the line in a battle by proxy against Vince McMahon. When Umaga lost to Lashley, Trump got the right to shave the head of Vince McMahon.

3. Cyndi Lauper

By the time WrestleMania came around, the law of diminishing returns had started to apply to the WWE career of Cyndi Lauper. Cyndi's fame caused the events that led to the first WrestleMania. In 1984, her involvement with Wendi Richter led to wrestling being broadcast live on MTV. Cyndi Lauper managing Wendi Richter to the Women's Championship against the Fabulous Moolah earned the honor of being the first wrestling match broadcast live on MTV. A few months later on MTV, she was saved by Mr. T from an attack by Roddy Piper and Paul Orndorff. At WrestleMania, Cyndi managed Wendi Richter to her second championship victory when she beat Lelani Kai.

4. Lawrence Taylor

In 1995, there was a void at the top of the card in the WWE. While Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart were main eventers, they still hadn't developed into the household names that they are today. At the time, Diesel was the WWE Champion and the prospect of him main eventing WrestleMania XI didn't scream WrestleMania main event to anyone. To rectify this situation, the WWE brought in Lawrence Taylor. LT had recently retired from the New York Giants. The company got a lot of main stream press out of LT's appearance. At the show, LT won his main event match against Bam Bam Bigelow.

5. Mike Tyson

In early 1998, the WWE was getting crushed by rival WCW. They had recently reinvented themselves from a cartoony show for children to a cutting edge show that young men would enjoy. When Tyson, who was serving a suspension for biting Evander Holyfield's ears, appeared on Monday Night RAW, the tide in the battle between the two wrestling organizations shifted. People turning in to see Tyson liked the new WWE and stuck around. At WrestleMania XIV, Tyson was the special enforcer for the WWE Championship between Shawn Michaels and Steve Austin.
