Intro:
WrestleMania X took place on March 20, 1994, at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The event featured two incredible matches and the beginning of the new generation era of the WWF. Hulk Hogan was not on the show and the main event featured two WWF title matches.
The Main Event Situation:
The Royal Rumble was declared a tie between Lex Luger and Bret Hart. Both men were to receive title matches at WrestleMania. A coin flip determined that Lex would fight Yokozuna first and Bret would have to fight his brother Owen so all men would have the same number of matches.
Bret vs Owen:
This sibling rivalry was due to Owen being jealous of all the success his brother had. At the Royal Rumble, Owen attacked his injured brother after they lost a tag team title match. The match between the brothers was incredible and was easily the greatest opening match in WrestleMania history. After 20 minutes, Owen surprised the world and beat his brother Bret.
The World Title Situation:
In the first title match, Yokozuna beat Lex Luger by DQ due to the corruption of special referee Mr. Perfect. In the final match of the evening, Bret Hart beat Yokozuna when Yoko slipped off the ropes when he attempted the Bonzai splash. The show ended with the locker room clearing out and the stars holding Bret on their shoulders. Meanwhile, Owen came to ringside and just glared at his brother.
The Most Revolutionary Match in WrestleMania History:
Shawn Michaels was stripped of the Intercontinental Title several months earlier and Razor Ramon won a battle royal to become the new champ. Both men held a physical belt and both men claimed to be the real champ. The two belts were place high above the ring and could only be reached by ladder. This was the first ladder match in WWF PPV history and was such a success that they are relatively common place today. Razor Ramon won this match.
Aftermath:
Bret would go on to face his brother Owen in a tremendous series of matches. Shawn's bodyguard Diesel would become one of the most popular stars in the company and would go on to win the WWF Championship at MSG a few months later. The transitional champion was the surprising Bob Backlund, who beat Bret thanks to Owen at the Survivor Series but lost the belt to Diesel a few days later.
The Light at the End of the Tunnel:
That summer, Vince would win his steroid trial against the federal government. Vince would not be able to rest on his laurels though as a new man took over WCW. His name was Eric Bischoff and his plan was to use Ted Turner's money to take over wrestling. His first big move was the signing of Hulk Hogan that summer.
