ECW was best known for their violence and some of these teams are the reason. These five teams were the best over the tenure of the original ECW. While only one of these teams found fame outside of the ECW Arena, all of these teams deserve to be recognized for their accomplishments in ECW.
1. The Public Enemy
The team made up of Flyboy Rocco Rock and Johnny Grunge is considered by many to be the first homegrown ECW stars. As bad guys, they incited the crowd to throw dozens of chairs at them in one of the most visually impressive moments in ECW history. As good guys, they had so many fans join them in the ring that the ring collapsed. Sadly, both members of the team have passed away.
The Dudley clan started off as a goof of the Hanson Brothers from Slapshot. Their father was a traveling salesman that had children with many women. By far the most successful version of the team featured Bubba Ray & D-Von with their personal announcer Joel Gertner. In addition winning the tag team titles eight times, their pre-match antics were known to incite the crowds to near riot levels. Bubba and D-Von went on to a successful career in the WWE and TNA.
3. The Eliminators
Perry Saturn and Kronus were a more traditional style tag team than the other teams on the list. They won the tag team titles on three occasions and in a total surprise at the time, they almost won ECWs first Pro Wrestling Illustrated year-end achievement award as tag team of the year in 1996. The team broke up when Saturn went to WCW. A few years later, Saturn joined the WWE as part of the Radicalz with Chris Benoit, Dean Malenko, and Eddie Guerrero. Kronus went on to form a tag team with New Jack. In 2007, Kronus passed away at the age of 38 due to heart failure caused by an enlarged heart.4. The Gangstas
New Jack and Mustafa, two time tag team champs, would enter the ring with a garbage can filled with weapons. In a match involving Mass Transit, New Jack brutally bloodied him with a huge machete type weapon and the incident scared the PPV companies from broadcasting ECWs first PPV event. New Jacks path of violence continued after ECW folded. The most infamous moment saw him get arrested for stabbing his opponent several times.
5. The Pitbulls
The Pitbulls won the tag team titles only one time but the angles they were involved with were legendary. Their feud with Shane Douglas saw Pitbull 1 have his neck broken. In an unbelievable moment, Douglas shook the halo that Pitbull 1 was forced to wear. The team was forced to leave ECW due to a legal issue involving drugs. In 2003, Pitbull 2 died from an overdose of fentanyl.
