6/2/06 Friday Night SmackDown! Recap

By Eric Cohen, About.com

- The Miz is introduced as the new host of SmackDown! He is in the crowd and runs down the card for the show.

Non-title Match: World Heavyweight Champ Rey Mysterio vs Kurt Angle – This is Kurt’s farewell match for SmackDown! ECW GM Paul Heyman is at the commentary table for this match and makes two huge matches for ECW One Night Stand. The first is that Kurt has issued an open challenge to anyone that competes in a ring, whether it is 4, 6, or 8 sided. He also announced that Rey would be battling ECW legend Sabu at ONS. As far as the match goes, it was incredible and by far the best match these two men have had against each other this year. The match went through several commercial breaks and ended when Kurt delivered a belly to belly suplex that wound up making Rey crash to the floor. Rey could not make it back to the ring by the 10 count. Winner: Kurt Angle by count out

- A video for Batista is shown. He will return to SmackDown! the week of July 4.

- Nunzio is in the back getting ready for his match with Matt Hardy. Nunzio is worried that the rumors swirling around about Vito have messed with his mind.

Nunzio vs Matt Hardy – Matt hits the twist of fate to get the win. After the match, Vito came down to the ring dressed in drag. Nunzio freaks out and runs away from his friend. Winner: Matt Hardy

Piper’s Pit: Guests The Great Kahli and his manager/translator Daivari - Daivari and Roddy Piper trade some insults and The Great Kahli was about to attack “Hot Rod” but Daivari stopped him. A few moments later, Piper slaps Daivari and The Great Kahli destroys “The Rowdy One” with the chop to the head.

Jillian Hall vs Kristal – Prior to the match, Ashley Massaro is announced as the newest member of SmackDown! and is at ringside doing commentary. Jillian wins the match when she reverses Kristal’s attempted victory roll. After the match, Candice Michelle’s music plays and Michelle McCool comes out. Her return to SmackDown! is marked with a new gimmick about her real life teacher experience. Winner: Jillian Hall

Mark Henry vs Paul Birchill – There have been rumors swirling that Birchill needs to take some time off and this match might be the way they write him out of the storylines for a while. Mark Henry decimates the pirate and after the match repeats the actions he did to Chris Benoit last week. Winner: Mark Henry

- A vignette for Ken Kennedy is shown. He will be returning next week.

Finlay vs Caden Matthews – The highlight of this match was Caden disappearing under the ring when he was outside. Finlay easily wins with the muscle buster. After the match, Finlay gets his leprechaun from under the ring. The leprechaun beats up Matthews until Finlay kicks his leprechaun back under the ring. Winner: Finlay

- A video vignette for Sabu is shown.

- Tazz challenges Jerry Lawler to a match at ECW One Night Stand.

Non-title Match: U.S. Champ Lashley vs King Booker w/Queen Sharmell - This is a rematch from the King of the Ring finals at Judgment Day. As part of the King’s introduction, William Regal continually says “All Hail King Booker”. Lashley dominates most of the match and wins with a running power slam. After the match, Booker, Regal, and Finlay triple team Lashley. The men then bring the throne into the ring and force Lashley to kiss the royal boot of King Booker. Winner: Lashley
