The first Unforgiven took place in April 1998 and was part of the In Your House PPV series. The next year, the event was moved to September. From 2003 - 2006, the event featured only wrestlers from the RAW brand. As part of the WWE rebranding their PPV events in 2009, the WWE replaced Unforgiven with a new submission-themed event called Breaking Point.
