Intro
In 2009, the WWE renamed several of their PPV events to coincide with a theme. The Hell in a Cell PPV event replaced No Mercy on the WWE calendar. Not all matches on the event are Hell in a Cell matches, only the matches deemed to be main event worthy will be fought in the cell.

A Hell in a Cell match features the ringside area surrounded by a steel cage with a roof on it. Currently, the roof is 20-feet in the air. Introduced in 1997, the Hell in a Cell match has become one of the most anticipated stipulation matches due to the sheer violence of the matches. Typically used as a last resort to end a long-running feuds, the match became the basis for a themed PPV event starting in 2009.
