The Bottom Line

This volume of the set is the definition of mediocre. None of the events made my list of the 3 best and 3 worst SummerSlam events. In addition, none of the matches in this volume have made my list of the 10 best matches in SummerSlam history. I only recommend owning this volume of the set if you buy it as a part of the 20-disc Anthology package.

Guide Review - SummerSlam Anthology Volume 4 (2002 - 2007) DVD Review

Over the past two years, the WWE has made a concerted effort to make SummerSlam seem important again. Last year the WWE put a Hell in a Cell match and a WrestleMania caliber match between John Cena and Batista on the show. This year, the company is holding a WrestleMania-style Axxess event and doing major cross-promotions for the show.

The reason for this renewed push for the show is because during the era this DVD set spans, the event lost a lot of its luster. The event went from being the second biggest show of the year to just another one of the many events on the wrestling calendar.

That is not to say the events on this volume are bad. It is just that everything is mediocre.

For those that have been keeping track of my reviews of these four volumes, my order of quality for these DVD sets is Volume 3, Volume 1, Volume 4, and then Volume 2. If you plan to buy more than one of these DVD sets, you may just want to check out the price of the entire 4-volume set. In addition to possibly saving yourself some money, the discs come in a container that looks and feels like a cooler. Your discs will be safer that way. As I griped about in my review of Volume 2, I am not a fan of the packaging of this set.
