The Bottom Line

The first successful wrestling book, Have a Nice Day by Mick Foley, also happened to be the best. Every wrestling book since then is compared unfavorably to it. Finally, there is a book that can be compared to it. While this book lacks the humor element that made Mick's unforgettable, this book answers many questions that fans have been wondering about for a long time.

Guide Review - Heartbreak & Triumph by Shawn Micheals

Beginning of Career
The first few chapters detail his life growing up. After that, his training and the first few stops in his career are written about. It is amazing the difference between wrestling schools of today and the way way the business was during the kayfabe era.

The Rockers
After reading about Verne Gagne's reaction to their name, it is no wonder why the AWA went out of business. The book also discusses the reasons Shawn & Marty broke up and why they never had a real blowoff to the feud.

The Kliq, Dropped Titles, Curtain Call, and Bar Fight
Shawn discussed all these controversies in detail. It has to be noted that this is where people might start to question some things in the book. At what point does perception become reality? I do believe that Shawn is telling his version of the truth but there are many that will debate it.

Montreal
This is the first time Shawn has spoken about these events in this detail. The locker room stories from the day of the show might be more interesting than the match itself.

Shawn Michaels' Autobiography, Member lizlt655

I was so excited with my purchase of Shawn Michaels' autobiography because I was a huge fan of his talents growing up. I never missed a show of RAW, tried my BEST to go to the live events and even stood outside of a Walmart for hours (skipped school :) ) just to get a glimpse of my iconic hero. So after many years of not watching wrestling or Shawn, one day I flipped the channel to a wrestling event and saw him and I then decided to buy the book and try to understand not only him but the wrestling world as a whole. I honestly thought that the insights from the book would leave me feeling satisfied and would have answered all my questions and I would still be in love with Shawn now as I was growing up. But I was wrong. In my opinion, his book came across cold, every sentence calculated and somehow trying unsuccessfully to manipulate the readers' opinion of him. Shawn came across whiny and as if he NEVER made mistakes or that somehow it was always someone else who was accountable for the actions which he took. An autobiography should be something that tells the truth of who you are, flaws, warts and all and Shawn's book seemed to have glossed over his imperfections while having not issues with pointing out the flaws of others. It also came across as another way to manipulate his fans who were looking to get a glimpse of the 'real' Shawn but maybe there is no such thing as him as a real person but the world of acting and wrestling in which he lives. I was disappointed because I was anticipating some true answers and accountability for his actions, especially towards the Montreal match with Bret Hart but even that I felt was not answered but rather glossed over to show him as the victim rather than an active participant in which he willingly played. While I'm not a fanatic of Bret Hart, some more feelings, explanations, accountabilities ect would have been appreciated. I don't mean to by any means pick apart Shawn's lifestyle, change in character or anything like that but as someone who does live in a relatively public way, he should have some accountability to his fans nor expect that everyone is as gullible or niave as he would like to think. Sorry Shawn. Still love ya though :)
