The Bottom Line

Gorgeous George: The Outrageous Bad-Boy Wrestler Who Created American Pop is the first biography of Gorgeous George, one of the first wrestling superstars. Not only does this book tell the story of his life and how he changed wrestling but it also shows how he also changed pop culture. This book will be enjoyed by any fan of Gorgeous George, the history of wrestling, or the entertainment and pop culture of that era.

Guide Review - Review of Gorgeous George by John Capouya

Before Hulkamania swept the nation, Gorgeous George was the first wrestling icon to take advantage of television. According to TV Guide, his television debut ranks as one of the greatest moments in TV history. Hated by the men and loved by the women, Gorgeous George helped give birth to the entertainment aspect of what the WWE now refers to as sports entertainment.

This book details why and how George Wagner became Gorgeous George and the legacy he left that was followed by Muhammad Ali, James Brown, and Bob Dylan. There are stories from all three men as well as other Hollywood legends in this book.

While the author rightfully dedicates portions of the book to the great legacy that George left in pop culture, he avoids taking a look at the legacy he left the wrestling world. George was the first world famous wrestler to die young and broke due to his demons. Given the problems wrestling still has with this issue, it would have been interesting to see this delved into further.

One of the best things about this book is that he interviewed George's first wife and the stories she shares are captivating. You can tell that the author researched this book thoroughly and his writing style is the most intellectual I have seen in a wrestling book.

After reading the book, I can say that I learned a lot about both the wrestling business from that era and the culture of that time. Add that to the fact that it was an entertaining read and I have to say that this book would make a fine addition to any wrestling fan's library.

Recommendation: Buy the book.
