Love him or hate him, Roddy Piper was one of the most entertaining performers in WWE history. This 3-disc DVD set is a fine tribute to the "Rowdy" one and worthy of a spot in your wrestling DVD collection.

Disc 1 - Feature Program, Extra Stories, & Pre-WWE Matches

The 98-minute biography of Roddy is very well done and tells a very different story than most wrestling biographies. Instead of being responsible for destroying his life, wrestling saved his. The profile of Roddy does not shy away from controversy and also features very rare footage from the L.A. based regional wrestling territory. The only problem I have with this portion of the program is JR's sound bites as he comes across as the company shill guy in every one of these DVD sets.

The extra stories add a little depth to the biography. There is one unbelievable story told by his lawyer of what Roddy did in court to get out of a DWI charge.

There are four matches on this disc. Two are from the Portland area and feature Roddy's feud with Buddy Rose. The other two are from the Mid-Atlantic area. One is a televised match against Jack Brisco and the other is the infamous Starrcade '83 dog collar match against Greg Valentine. That match is required viewing for every wrestling fan.

Disc 2 - The Matches

  • WrestleMania 3/85: Roddy & Paul Orndorff vs Hulk Hogan & Mr. T
  • SNME 10/85: vs Paul Orndorff
  • WM 2 4/86: boxing match vs Mr. T
  • SNME 10/85: vs The Iron Sheik
  • SNME 11/86: vs Bob Orton
  • WM 3 1/87: vs Adrian Adonis
  • War to Settle the Score 2/85: vs Hulk Hogan
  • MSG 12/86: steel cage match vs Rick Rude
  • WM 6 4/90: vs Bad News Brown
  • WM 8 4/92: vs Bret Hart
  • Royal Rumble 1/92: vs The Mountie
  • WM 12 3/96: vs Goldust
  • Starrcade 12/96: vs Hulk Hogan

I have to admit that I was pleasantly surprised that this DVD was not marred by either the Jesse Ventura or David Crockett edit. The only changes on this disc involve Hulk Hogan's music. Even though it appears that Hulk is walking out to Real American, in reality, Hulk didn't start using that as his entrance song until 1986.

As far as the match selection goes, the WWE did a good job of picking some great matches. My only problem with this disc is that some of the matches are not in chronological order and that can be confusing to newer fans. Examples of this are Roddy losing the Intercontinental title before winning it on the disc and the match that caused the first WrestleMania to happen being shown after the WrestleMania match.

Disc 3 - Piper's Pit

Piper's Pit was a revolutionary segment in the wrestling business and has spawned many imitations over the years. There are 24 segments of the show shown starting with the very first segment and ending with what has been his final segment, a recent interview with the Great Khali.

Just like the match selection, the WWE did a very good job making sure that the most memorable Pits are shown. Obviously included on this disc are his very controversial episodes featuring Jimmy Snuka, Bruno Sammartino, and Frank Williams. Thankfully, none of the episodes that featured Cyndi Lauper screaming at the top of her lungs in her annoying voice were included.

Unfortunately, there are two items leading up to WrestleMania that did not make it onto this set because they were neither matches or Piper's Pits. While they both were mentioned in the profile on disc one, these segments should have been included in their entirety somewhere on this DVD set. They are the infamous MSG ceremony that ended with Roddy Piper kicking Cyndi Lauper and his training regiment with Paul Orndorff leading up to WrestleMania.
