I'm From Hollywood

Intro

About.com Rating 2.5

By Eric Cohen, About.com

This movie is about the wrestling career of Andy Kaufman. There are interviews with Tony Danza, Robin Williams, and Marilu Henner about the state of mind Andy Kaufman was in at the time and the affect pro wrestling was having on his career.

The Plot

In 1982, Andy Kaufman used his comedy bit of wrestling women to the Memphis territory where he eventually feuded with Jerry Lawler. This movie follows the feud while also interviewing the participants and Andy's Hollywood friends. In addition, while the David Letterman fiasco is mentioned, they do not show any footage of the incident. Fans of Kaufman are also given the privilege of seeing some of his more famous comedy bits as proof that no one ever knew when Andy was serious.

The Wrestling Action

While no complete matches are shown, this DVD gives the viewer a good idea of what wrestling was like during the territory era. The fans are absolutely rabid in their hatred of Kaufman and for good reason. His very politically incorrect rants against women and Memphis were used to spur this feud because the fans wanted to see their "King" beat up Kaufman for the insults. The matches and wrestling action really are not that good but are historic none the less.

Overall Recommendation

I'd recommend watching the program when it airs on Comedy Central as opposed to buying the DVD. While the interviews aren't very good (and are terribly produced) and the wrestling is pretty bad; Andy Kaufman was one of the funniest entertainers ever and you can't go wrong watching him on TV for an hour.
