Ric Flair & The Four Horsemen DVD

The Four Horsemen were a revolutionary group that forever changed pro wrestling. The template for their success was copied by the NWO, D-Generation X, and Evolution. This 2-disc set features a 2-hour documentary that tells the history of the group. The matches on this DVD have never been released on DVD before and there are two matches that have never been seen on TV before.

The Documentary

The documentary is over 2-hours long. It features interviews with many of the Horsemen including Flair, Arn Anderson, Tully Blanchard, Chris Benoit, Dean Malenko, J.J. Dillon, and Paul Roma. One of the interesting things on the DVD is that Arn never broke kayfabe. This allowed newer fans to know the storyline reasons why certain changes were made while the other interviews gave the behind-the-scenes reasons. Even older fans will appreciate that because after twenty years it is hard to remember why certain things occurred. Every era of the Horsemen is discussed, the good and the bad. However, there is greater emphasis and detail given to the glory days of the group, the first few years when Tully Blanchard was in the group.

The Matches

The following matches are on this DVD:
  • Arn Anderson, Ole Anderson (not Tully Blanchard as the inset & DVD states), and Ric Flair vs Pez Whatley, The Italian Stallion, and Rocky King
  • Steel Cage Match: Ric Flair vs Ricky Morton
  • War Games: The Four Horsemen vs Dusty Rhodes, Steve Williams, Lex Luger, Nikita Koloff, and Paul Ellering
  • First Blood Match: Tully Blanchard vs Dusty Rhodes
  • Tully Blanchard & Arn Anderson vs Sting & Nikita Koloff
  • Arn Anderson & Tully Blanchard vs Barry Windham & Lex Luger
  • Arn Anderson vs Ric Flair

How Were the Matches?

I am very glad that all of the matches, with one exception, are from the Tully Blanchard era of the group. It is that era of the group which was the elite group in wrestling. All of the matches have never been available on DVD before. Two of the matches (the War Games and the Ricky Morton match), I believe were never televised. While I am glad they are on here (especially the Morton match), there is no commentary for these matches (which bumped this DVD down a 1/2 star). Newer fans will be confused by the rules of the War Games match and quite honestly, I don't remember why Ellering is in this match without the Road Warriors. As far as the Morton match goes, I have waited over 20 years to see this and it was well worth the wait. However, I would have loved to hear Jim Ross do a backing commentary for this match, especially considering that he always mentions Ricky and the Rock-n-Roll Express almost every week in his blog.

Overall Recommendation

Buy this DVD. While I might be a little biased because Ric Flair is my favorite wrestler, the truth is that this DVD is an incredible stroll down memory lane. If you were a fan of the original Horsemen you have to buy this DVD. If you became a wrestling fan later on and always wondered why the Horsemen name was so important (even though it appeared they were getting beaten up by the NWO every week), this DVD will explain what made the Horsemen name so prestigious. If you are a new fan and are unfamiliar with the Horsemen, this DVD is a great way to learn about the glorious past of this great business.
