On September 30, 2009, I interviewed former WWE Superstar Kevin Thorn (aka Mordechai). If you would like to meet Kevin in person, he will be appearing this weekend in the Philadelphia area at the Ultimate Collectibles and Autograph Show. Kevin will be joined by several dozen wrestlers at this event as well as over 100 other celebrities from the worlds of sports, music, television, movies, and comics.

Eric: My readers haven’t seen you on TV in quite some time. Could you tell me what you have been up to?
Kevin Thorn: I’ve been traveling the world. Wrestling pretty much everywhere I can.

Eric: Do you have a MySpace or Facebook pages where fans can follow you?
Kevin Thorn: On MySpace it is www.myspace.com/thethornasylum. On Facebook it is under seventhorn.

Eric: When you debuted in the WWE, you played the part of Mordecai. Who came up with that idea and why was the character dropped so soon?
Kevin Thorn: It was a mixture of mine and Vince’s [McMahon] idea. The main reason it was dropped so soon was because I got into a fight in a bar and got into some trouble with a lawsuit. WWE just didn’t want to take the risk of keeping me on board and getting sued or so-on and so-forth.

Eric: When you came back, you were playing the vampire character. How did the vampire character come about?
Kevin Thorn: Basically, they were starting on SciFi. SciFi wanted some different characters. Some of them never made it past one or two shows, like the Zombie, the Alien, or whatever else you saw at the very beginning on SciFi. It just so happened that when they came up to me and asked if I wanted to be a vampire and stuff like that I said “Sure”. I put a lot into it and it worked out.

Eric: How did having Ariel [aka: Salinas, Shelly Martinez] happen?
Kevin Thorn: That was something that Paul Heyman thought about and asked me about. I thought it was a great idea. She was awesome. I can’t say enough good things about the way Shelly made the gimmick that much better. Having her alongside of me made it a stand out set.

Eric: She left the company before you did. Why did the WWE separate the two of you?
Kevin Thorn: I don’t know. There was something that went on with her and another wrestler or something and they decided on letting her go. That was pretty much what happened. I was just called and told that I was still on board, they are still behind me, they still want to use me, and we’re gonna to move on without her.

Eric: Towards the end of your stint in ECW, you had dropped the vampire gimmick. Given the recent popularity of vampires in pop culture due to Twilight and True Blood, do you think that the WWE dropped the ball by doing that?
Kevin Thorn: They fumbled and dropped the ball and whatever else you can say. They lost out big time on that one. We were way ahead of the game with that character and things that could have been done with the character. I still shake my head, I don’t get it. But hey, it’s Vince’s toy. He gets to do whatever he wants with it. He’s the final word. He didn’t want a vampire. Guess what, he didn’t have to have a vampire.

Eric: Shortly after that change you left the WWE. What led to your release from the company?
Kevin Thorn: I asked for my release because I was sick of sitting at home.

Eric: The biggest question I get on this site all the time is from people wanting to become professional wrestlers. What advice do you have for any of my readers that may be interested in becoming a pro wrestler?
Kevin Thorn: Go to school. Get a college education. Find a real job. Once you figure all of that out, if you still want to become a professional wrestler go ahead. That way, you can always have something to fall back on.

Eric: Is there anything else you would like my readers to know?
Kevin Thorn: If they have Facebook or MySpace they can find me. I also have a website. It is www.seven-thorn.com. They can come and check me out over there and find out where I’m going to be next. I update all three so you can always find out where I’m going to be. This weekend, we have the Ultimate Collectible Show up in the Philly area. Come out, get an autograph, and come see me. Just watch for me, I’ll be somewhere soon.
