WWE Ladder Match 2: Crash & Burn DVD Review

WWE Ladder Match 2 DVD Cover

In 2004, WWE Home Video released The Ladder Match. That 3-disc DVD set featured 22 matches and garnered a 5-star rating from me. Ladder Match 2: Crash and Burn contains 21 Ladder Matches. This set includes matches that didn't make it onto the first DVD set and matches that took place after that one was released. My review is for the 3-disc DVD edition of this set but there is also a 2-disc Blu-ray version of this set on the market which features a few more matches.

Review and Recommendation

Format of the DVD: This set is hosted by Christian. He appears several times over the course of the set to talk about some of the action that was just seen or to hype an upcoming bout.

Packaging Note: The DVD set features a chapter listing on the inside sleeve of the package. The person writing that list apparently does not know the difference between the WWE and the World Tag Team Championship. The two tag team matches featuring the Hardys were for the World Tag Team Championship and the the WWE Tag Team Championship as is listed on the inner sleeve.

Rating and Editing Issue: This set is rated TV 14 V and features Steve Austin flipping the bird as he loved to do during the Attitude Era. Since there is footage from that era, we have to deal with the blurred WWF logo. That blurring is really annoying during the Mick Foley vs. Rock bout.

Length of the DVD: When the WWE releases a set on both DVD and Blu-ray, the DVD set has consistently run significantly less than the "Approx. running time: 9 hours." that is listed on the box. Excluding the previews and "Don't Try This at Home" segments, the running time of this set is slightly longer than 7 hours.

Match Selection: WWE went to through their vault for some of these matches and include action from four different wrestling organizations. They also did not repeat any matches from the first Ladder Match DVD. Overall, I liked the variation of the types of matches on this set. There are singles matches, tag team bouts, handicap matches, a women's match, and matches where everyman must fight for himself. In addition to just titles dangling from the ladder, this set featured matches with checks, contracts, suitcases, and a gold record dangling for the ring. In addition to the normal championship bouts, some of these matches featured extra things on the line like the ownership of the company, a wrestler's job, a main event spot in WrestleMania, and the singing career of Tank Abbot's favorite band.

Overall Recommendation: Despite the short length of this set, I still think that it deserves a place in the wrestling library of every wrestling fan. I actually enjoyed this one more than the first set. The reason this one is rated 1/2 a star lower is because of the length issue.

As far as getting this on DVD or Blu-ray, I think that decision should be based on your budget. I realize that the Blu-ray viewer should get a little more than the DVD viewer since they are paying more for footage that features a lot of action that wasn't filmed in HD. However, that has led me to feel very ripped off for the DVD consumer in some circumstances (especially the Shawn vs. Bret DVD). In this case, I don't feel that way at all. The Blu-ray customer got a few extra matches but their exclusion didn't make this DVD set feel incomplete.
