Battleground 2013 took place on October 6, 2013, at the First Niagara Center in Buffalo, New York. The announcers for this event were Michael Cole, Jerry Lawler, and JBL.

Kickoff Match: Dolph Ziggler vs. Damien Sandow - This match took place during the Kickoff Show for this event which streamed on WWE.com 30 minutes prior to the start of the pay-per-view.  During the match, Sandow tweaked his knee which ensured he would be unable to cash in his Money in the Bank contract later in the show.  Dolph Ziggler won the match after hitting the Zig Zag.  Winner: Dolph Ziggler

Battleground Hardcore Rules Match for the World Heavyweight Championship: Champion Alberto Del Rio vs. Rob Van Dam - Ricardo Rodriguz was in the corner of Rob Van Dam.  After RVD missed a rolling thunder onto a ladder, Alberto Del Rio applied the cross-arm breaker.  The hold was broken when Ricardo Rodriguez hit him with a bucket.  The champion then attacked his former employee but forgot about RVD who hit him with a splash from the ring apron onto the floor while a ladder was on the champion's chest.  RVD then went for the Van Terminator but Del Rio was able to move out of the way.  The champion then used that chair for leverage when he applied the cross-arm breaker which forced RVD to submit.  Winner: Alberto Del Rio

Great Khali & Santino Marella vs. Jack Swagger & Antonio Cesaro - Hornswoggle was in the corner of the non-Americans while Zeb Coulter was in the corner of The Real Americans.  Jack riled up the fans and his opponents when Jack Swagger ripped up Hornswoggle's mini-cobra.  Moments later, Cesaro threw Santino's cobra out of the ring.  When Khali went for the big boot on Cesaro, Antonio ducked and chopped the giant's legs.  Cesaro then hit the Great Khali with The Cesaro Swing to get the win for his team.  Winners: Jack Swagger & Antonio Cesaro beat The Great Khali & Santino Marella

Intercontinental Championship: Champion Curtis Axel vs. R-Truth - Paul Heyman was in the corner of the champion.  Curtis Axel took control of the match after ramming R-Truth's back into the ringside barricade.  Amidst a chant of boring chants, Curtis hit the neck breaker to get the win.  Winner: Curtis Axel

Divas Championship: Champion AJ Lee vs. Brie Bella -   Brie was accompanied to the ring by her sister, Nikki, while the champion had Tamina Snuka in her corner.  AJ smashed Brie into the ring post and then went to work on Brie's arm.  Brie was eventually able to get back into the match but outside of the ring Tamina attacked Nikki.  Brie turned her attention to Tamina which allowed AJ to roll up Brie from behind to get the win.  Winner: AJ Lee

WWE Tag Team Champions Seth Rollins & Roman Reigns vs. Cody Rhodes & Goldust - Winners:   While the titles are not on the line, something much more important for the Rhodes family is.  If they lose, Cody and Goldust will never be rehired and their father, Dusty Rhodes, who was at ringside, will also be fired from the company.  United States Champion Dean Ambrose is at ringside for The Shield.  After getting the hot tag, Goldust dominated Roman Reigns until he missed a body block and went crashing outside the ring.  The Shield controlled the match until Goldust made the tag to his brother.  Cody appeared to be on the verge of winning the match when Roman Reigns broke up a two-count.  Dean Ambrose distracted Cody Rhodes which let to Dusty hitting Dean with the Bionic Elbow. While Goldust and Roman Reigns were brawling outside of the ring, Cody hit the Cross Rhodes on Seth Rollins to get the win for his family.  Winners:  Cody Rhodes & Goldust

Kofi Kingston vs. Bray Wyatt - Erick Rowan and Luke Harper of The Wyatt Family were at ringside for Bray.  They didn't factor in the final moments of the match which ended with Bray Wyatt hitting Sister Abigal to get the win.  Following the match, the family knocked Kofi out which led to Bray giving another cryptic speech ending with "follow the buzzards".  Winner: Bray Wyatt

CM Punk vs. Ryback - Paul Heyman was at ringside for Ryback and warned him that Punk was nothing but a bully and you've got to stand up to them.  When CM Punk called for the Go to Sleep, Paul Heyman grabbed the microphone and started to brag about pinning Punk.  Punk turned his attention towards Heyman which allowed Ryback to hit him with a Powerbomb.  Punk kicked out at two and then escaped a second one attempted on him.  Punk hit the Macho Man elbow but couldn't get the pin.  Ryback powered out of a Go to Sleep attempt and slammed Punk . Ryback then pummeled Punk in front of Heyman who mocked him. The referee stopped Heyman from hitting Punk with a Kendo Stick.  Punk took advantage of the referee turning his back and hit Ryback with a low blow to get the win.  Winner: CM Punk

- A power outage occurred which led to a delay in the show for a few minutes.

WWE Championship: Daniel Bryan vs. Randy Orton - After escaping an RKO attempt, Daniel Bryan hooked in the Yes Lock.    Big Show stormed down to the ring where he pulled the referee out of the ring and then hit Daniel Bryan with the KO punch.  Referee Scott Armstrong came to the ring and almost counted to three when Big Show pulled him out of the ring and gave him the KO punch.  Big Show then entered the ring and gave the KO punch to Randy Orton.  Winner: No Contest

What does this event mean for the future?
In three weeks, WWE will be presenting Hell in a Cell. I would assume that Daniel Bryan and Randy Orton will fight once again to fill the vacancy but the structure will keep others from interfering.  It also appears that  Big Show has turned face and I would expect him to join forces with the Rhodes family in their feud against The Shield.

Overall Thoughts
Three pay-per-view events in a six -week span is too many.  As is usually the case, this time of the year results in some of the weakest events of the year due to the condensed calendar.  This event was slightly better than Night of Champions, which I dubbed the worst pay-per-view event of the year, based solely on The Shield vs. The Rhodes Family which was the best match of the two shows.  Even though it was slightly better than the last event, I still have to give this a thumb's down.  If you missed this one, you saved yourself some money.
