The fate of the WWE Championship was supposed to be settled on Monday night. Despite the title changing hands two times on Monday Night RAW, we have been left with more questions than answers.
The show began with Rey Mysterio battling The Miz in the final match of the tournament to declare a new WWE Champion. Rey Mysterio won the match and in the process won the WWE Championship for the first time (note: he is a former two-time World Heavyweight Champion). Sadly for Rey, he never got to take the belt home with him.
Immediately following his victory, the Miz hit him with a cheap shot. Sensing that Rey was in trouble, Alberto Del Rio attempted to cash in his Money in the Bank title shot. Before the referee could ring the bell to start the match, Rey recovered and hit Alberto with an aerial maneuver outside of the ring. Alberto then ran away with his briefcase which still contains a shot at the title whenever he wants it within the next year.
While Rey was able to escape that situation, his title reign was still in severe jeopardy. In one of his first announcements as the new head of the WWE, Triple H made a match between Rey Mysterio and John Cena for later in the evening since John never got his championship rematch after losing the title to CM Punk last week. Sadly for Rey, John Cena won that championship rematch and the WWE Championship. However, just like Rey, John had little time to celebrate.
John's championship celebration was disrupted by CM Punk. Punk came to the ring with the WWE Championship belt he won from John Cena last week. While John is the official WWE Champion, the fans declared Punk to be the real champion when both men raised their belts in the air. When last night's show went off the air, CM Punk announced to the crowd that he was back. If I was a betting man, I'd wager that we will be seeing this issue cleared up inside of the ring in a few weeks at SummerSlam.
