Edge Announces Retirement

The wrestling world is in a state of shock following Edge's retirement announcement last night. As most fans know, Edge was out of action for most of 2003 due to having surgery to fuse the discs between his C5, C6, and C7 vertebrae. Due to resuming his wrestling career after that surgery, he developed stenosis of the spine above and below the fused discs. According to WWE.com, he had been suffering from symptoms of nueropraxia, which results in numbness and trembling of the arms. Last Monday, which was a day after his successful World Championship title defense against Alberto Del Rio at WrestleMania XXVII, Edge went for an MRI. Based upon the results of that MRI, doctors have determined that Edge will never be medically cleared to wrestle again because he could face paralysis or death due to this medical condition.

Sometimes, it is very easy for fans to forget the punishment the wrestlers put their bodies through. However, this is a stark reminder of just how dangerous professional wrestling is. I am very saddened for Edge that he will no longer be able to continue to wrestle and live his childhood dream. As a fan, I just want to thank him for providing me with many great memories and to wish him the best of luck in whatever he chooses to do next with his life.

I am almost embarrassed to mention story lines at this point, but it must be noted that Edge is the current World Heavyweight Champion. He will officially vacate the title this week on Friday Night SmackDown. He was originally scheduled to defend the title against Alberto Del Rio in a Ladder Match at Extreme Rules but obviously that bout will not be happening.

Edge is one of the Greatest Main Event Champions, Mid Card Champions and Tag Team Champions in the Wrestling History. He has won more Main Event Championships then any other wrestler from Canada with 11 compared to Bret Hart’s 7. He has won more Tag Team Championships then any other wrestler from Canada with 13 compared to Christian’s 9. I expect Edge to be inducted into the WWE Hall Of Fame over the next few years.

The WWE and I will miss Edge. The WWE needs to put Christian in Edge’s place in the Ladder Match for the vacant World Title against Alberto Del Rio at Extreme Rules. Christian proved while he was in TNA and the New ECW that he can be the Main Event Champion. Edge had his time and now it is Christian’s time. I expect John Morrison or Randy Orton to be drafted to Smackdown due to Edge retiring. The WWE won’t be the same without Edge.

Edge will be deeply missed. I hope that he will be able to come back to the WWE in some other capacity. Maybe an announcer or even a Manager. He would make a great GM for RAW… :)
I think having Christian in Edge’s place would be great. After all, who knows Edge (his moves included) better than Christian, NO ONE…

I would like to know how you get an MRI with metal fused to your body. I was told that I would not be able to get an MRI because of the metal that is in my body. Sorry to hear that Edge will not be wrestling anymore and he certainly represented Canada well. Proud to be from Toronto and share that space with a special wrestler like Edge!

Sad news! No-one likes to have end a career like this. But your health comes first.

I never really took to Edge as a character, especially with the Vicki G marriage.

But kudo’s to a fine wrestler and all the best in the future.
