TNA Slammiversary 2009 Recap and Results

Sunday June 21, 2009
TNA celebrated their seventh anniversary with their annual King of the Mountain Match for the TNA World Championship. In addition to the main event, three other titles were up for grabs, roster spots for both TNA and the Main Event Mafia were on the line, and the first-ever Mixed Tag Team Monster's Ball Match took place.

King of the Mountain Match: TNA World Champion Mick Foley vs. Kurt Angle vs. Samoa Joe vs. AJ Styles vs. Jeff Jarrett
This match featured a shocking ending as Samoa Joe handed the title belt to Kurt Angle and let him put the title on the hook. Joe and Angle then embraced as Main Event Mafia Members Scott Steiner, Kevin Nash, Booker T, and Sharmell came out to celebrate.

TNA Tag Team Championship: Champions Team 3D vs. Beer Money (Robert Roode & James Storm)
A storyline that played out during this show involved Team 3D arriving to the arena late because they just returned from Japan where they were wrestling last night. During the match, the British Invasion came to ringside and joined the announcers at the commentary table. When it looked like Team 3D was going to win after hitting the 3D, the British Invasion distracted the referee and tried to attack the tag team champs. While the British Invasion wasn't able to physically harm Team 3D, the distraction of battling them allowed Beer Money to hit the DWI on Devon to get the win and regain the tag team titles.

Sting vs. Matt Morgan
TNA's announcement and promotion of this match caused some confusion as to what was on the line in this match. It turned out that if Matt won this match then he would become the new leader of the Main Event Mafia. While Matt proved to be too powerful to submit to the Scorpion Death Lock, he was not strong enough to stay off his shoulders for three seconds after Sting hit the Scorpion Death Drop off the middle rope. As a result of this match, Sting is still the leader of the Main Event Mafia and Matt Morgan is still not a member of the group.

  • Angelina Love retained the Knockouts Championship due to the interference of Velvet Sky and Madison Rayne
