Backlash 2009 Recap & Results

ECW Championship: Champion Jack Swagger vs. Christian - Swagger dominated most of this match with his amateur background. However, the rookie’s inexperience cost him the title. He tried to take the turnbuckle pad off but the referee stopped him. While that was going on, Christian took a turnbuckle pad off. Swagger charged at Christian but he ducked and Swagger hit the exposed steel where the turnbuckle pad should have been, Christian then hit the Kill Switch to get the pin and win the title. Winner and New Champion: Christian

- Christian celebrates in the back and meets his old ally Edge. The two have some words for each other and Edge starts to say that he used to be fun until John Cena turned him into a “bitter raving lunatic”. When he wins the title tonight, he will be fun once again.

Chris Jericho vs. Ricky Steamboat - With the exception of a botched figure-four attempt, Steamboat showed no signs of ring-rust for someone that hasn’t had a one-on-one match on PPV for 15 years. Steamboat also appeared about 10 years younger than he was at WrestleMania by dying his hair black. However, the bottle of hair dye didn’t change the outcome of this match as the same thing that happened three weeks ago happened again. Chris Jericho beat Steamboat again. This time, he made Steamboat submit to the Walls of Jericho. Winner: Chris Jericho

CM Punk vs. Kane - Punk worked on the right arm of Kane so he couldn’t deliver the choke slam. The strategy appeared to work when Kane tried to deliver a choke slam and Punk was able to kick out of the attempt. He delivered a flurry of kicks to the head of Kane until one of them was caught in mid-air by Kane. Kane then used both hands to deliver the choke slam to get the win. Winner: Kane

I Quit Match: Jeff Hardy vs. Matt Hardy - The bulk of this match saw Matt working over the brother of his leg. When Jeff was in control, the action didn’t pick up at all. He put his brother on a table. He then proceeded to use duct tape to tie his brother’s hands and legs together. He then used rope to tie his brother to the table. He brought a ladder into the ring and went to the top of it. Matt started to plead with his brother. He brought up brotherly love, apologized for what he did, brought up their mother watching from heaven, and their father watching sick at home. Matt finally said “I Quit”. Jeff then jumped off the top-rope, leapfrogged the ladder and crashed through the table with his brother still on it. Winner: Jeff Hardy

Santina Marella on the Great Khali Kiss Cam - The Great Khali and his translator Ranjin Singh call Santina Marella out to the ring. When she gets into the ring, she claims she has been lying. She isn’t a single woman, she is in love with someone else. When asked who, she said Jim Ross. Khali proclaimed that she wouldn’t have to kiss him if he kissed Jim Ross instead. Beth Phoenix, the girlfriend of Santino Marella, comes out and wants this all to end right now. She challenges Santina to a match for the title of Miss WrestleMania right now.

Beth Phoenix vs. Santina Marella - Before the match starts, Great Khali and Beth get into it. She wants to know whether he is the biggest idiot in the world or if all the Punjab women are that ugly. Khali decks Beth Phoenix. Instead of coming to his girlfriend’s aid, Santina tells the referee to ring the bell. Santina then covered Beth her for the three-count. However, before she could leave the ring, the Great Khali ripped the shirt off of Santina. Santina tried to cover up her wardrobe malfunction while running to the back. Winner: Santina Marella

WWE Championship: Triple H, Batista, & Shane McMahon vs. Randy Orton, Cody Rhodes, & Ted DiBiase - The rules of this match stipulated that if Orton’s team won the match he would win the title and if they didn’t then Triple H would retain the title. In addition, the title could change hands on a disqualification. Towards the end of the match, Cody Rhodes used a chair outside of the ring to knock out Shane and then hit Batista with it. Inside of the ring, Triple H was about to deliver a pedigree to Orton while outside of the ring, Batista was about to hit Cody with the chair. Triple H let go of Orton and grabbed the chair from Batista so he wouldn’t lose the title by DQ. Orton then gave Triple H the RKO but Triple H kicked out. Orton then hit Triple H with the punt to get the pin and win the title. After the match, Triple H had to be stretchered out of the ring. Despite being the fan favorite, loud chats of “Na na na na. Na na na na. Hey Hey. Goodbye” and “Please Retire” were chanted. Winners: The Legacy and as a result Randy Orton won the title

Last Man Standing for the World Heavyweight Championship: Champion John Cena vs. Edge - This match featured each man hit several devastating maneuvers on each other only for each man to stand up before the referee made the 10-count. Towards the end of the match, John Cena had Edge set up for an Attitude Adjustment at the top of the ramp. The Big Show came out, grabbed Cena and through him into a giant spotlight that exploded when Cena crashed through it. Cena couldn’t answer the 10-count and Edge regained the title. Just like Triple H, John Cena was carted off in a stretcher. Winner and new champion: Edge

What does this event mean for the future?
There are new champions for all three brands in the WWE and starting now, the draft will be enforced. With another PPV in only 3 weeks, I would expect for Triple H to miss the match and for Orton to defend the title against Batista. I think the feud between the Hardy brothers has come to a finish as has the feud between Jericho and the Legends. A new feud between Big Show and John Cena started tonight. As far as Edge goes, the big question is when will CM Punk cash in his money in the bank title shot?

Overall Thoughts
The first three matches were decent if this was a free TV show and then the show went downhill quickly. The Hardy match was horrible and a disgrace to all the I Quit matches that came before them. The Khali kiss-cam segment was mildly humorous, especially the reactions of Jim Ross and the announcers, but this really had no place on a PPV event. The six-man tag team match would have been better if Triple H was in it more. Instead, it just seemed like a Shane McMahon beat down.

As far as the Cena-Edge match goes, watching 1..2..3..4..5..6..7..8..9 the 1..2..3..4..5..6..7..8..9 match 1..2..3..4..5..6..7..8..9 felt 1..2..3..4..5..6..7..8..9 like 1..2..3..4..5..6..7..8..9 this 1..2..3..4..5..6..7..8..9..10. While there were a bunch of big spots, there was no flow to the match. There were just way too many ridiculously slow 10-counts in the match for my taste.

Without a doubt, this was the worst of the 4 PPV events the WWE has presented this year. As you can guess from my description of the show, I did not like it and if you decided not to pay for this show you saved yourself $40.

  • WWE Championship: Randy Orton, Cody Rhodes, & Ted DiBiase beat Triple H, Batista, and Shane McMahon. As a result, Randy Orton won the title.
  • Last Man Standing for the World Heavyweight Championship: Edge beat John Cena to win the title

I can honestly say that I really enjoyed the Last Man Standing match between Edge and John Cena. I felt that the slow pace and high impact moves made the battle seem epic, like it could have been the definitive end to the feud between Cena and Edge(for now).

I also got right inbto the opening contest for the ECW title. This was easily the best match Swagger has had in his WWE career, and the best singles match Christian has had since his return. Their conflicting styles compliment each other perfectly, and each man makes the other look good. While the focus of ECW should now turn to the retirement of Tommy Dreamer, I certainly hope I have not seen the end of the battles between these two men.

And the moment I have waited months for finally arrived, as the WWE finally gave some on screen recognition to the relationship between Edge and Christian. I thoght the content of their conversation highlighted what has happened to the wrestling industry in 10 years. It used to be a lot more fun. I hope WWE does something with edge and christian.

BackLash was bad but I didn’t see the last part Of the last man standing match between John Cena (as worstest wrestler ever) and Edge, Before the upcoming pay-per-view I felt that Edge Will be champion And did I not wrong about that. Big Show is the guy who always stuck his nose to matches that he’s not compete for them.

I Should to watch the Extreme rules match between jeff And matt, Especially becuase I love some Extreme Matches as it called “Hardcore”, Those superstars using their smart moves and sometimes “The Dangerous moves” and the Easy ways to get the pinfall. when These two battled each other in the past it was at Vengeance 2001 and Lita was the special guest referee, Since that I doesn’t seen match between those two but At BackLash they fought one-one-one After 8 years.

As now Randy Orton is the WWE Champion And I am so sad about that, Did I hope for a match between batista and Triple H next months.. While orton is the current champion and Triple H is not, There’s no chance that it will happen soon, But very closely, Batista Must And Should to Challenge orton for the WWE title even if it’s on Raw, But at the pay-per-view shows they diserves their pleasures and title matches..

i think the match between john cena and egde was horrible and wrong. I think egde should have got disqualified from the match as he had help from the Big Show otherwise egde wouldnt have a chance again john cena. In my mind john cena is still the champion and he will one day be a legend!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would say that backlash was infact better than wrestlemania 25, some may disagree, but backlash was great i thought, except the kane v cm punk match was pointless. And the best thing is, Backlash was free in the UK!!

For me john cena is the best wrestler of all not only bcause im his fan he is fair with all his matches.and edge always got help.
