TNA Genesis 2009 PPV Recap and Results

Sunday January 11, 2009
The last two TNA PPV events featured the Main Event Mafia sweep their matches against the Frontline. Tonight, the Frontline had three opportunities to finally get a PPV victory against the Mafia. However, two of the matches had major questions about the competitors getting to the ring. Main Event Mafia member Kevin Nash, part of the six-man tag team match, was not at the show due to a staph infection. Meanwhile, Rhino, who was the challenger for Sting's TNA World Championship could not be found.

Throughout the show, Jim Cornette tried to find out what happened to Rhino. Kurt Angle said that the Main Event Mafia went to his hotel and gave him an offer he couldn't refuse. When he refused, the Main Event Mafia beat him up.

No DQ Match: Kurt Angle vs. Jeff Jarrett
This was the first of the three main event matches between the Mafia and Frontline tonight. The Mafia's streak was kept alive as Kurt beat Jeff Jarrett with a roll-up to even their series at one apiece. In a post-match beat down, Kurt injured Jeff when he used a chair on Jeff's ankle. Jeff had to be stretchered out of the arena.

TNA World Championship: Champion Sting vs. Rhino
Rhino comes to the ring with his head bandaged up from the attack earlier today. Despite the beat down, the crowd was solidly behind Sting and cheered when he retained the title by using the Scorpion Death Drop after Rhino missed the Gore.

Scott Steiner, Booker T, and Cute Kip vs. Mick Foley, AJ Styles, and Brother D-Von
Kevin Nash was replaced by Cute Kip in this match. Yes, you read that correctly, Cute Kip is in the final match of this PPV event. The match initially ended in a double count out. Jim Cornette said the show wouldn't end like that and Booker said that Jim doesn't have the authority to restart the match. Foley says that as Executive Shareholder he does and he makes the match Hardcore Rules. This one ended for real when Mick gave Steiner a double-arm DDT on a chair to get the win for his team. The Frontline has finally won a match against the Main Event Mafia on PPV.

Other Events of Note

  • Due to a legitimate neck injury, Christy Hemme was taken out of the Knockouts Championship match. She has blogged about the injury and her plan for an alternative to surgery on her MySpace page.
  • According to PWInsider.com, Awesome Kong suffered a back injury which kept her from wrestling tonight. TNA never acknowledged that Kong was hurt and couldn't fight. Since both the champion and contender couldn't fight tonight, a six-woman tag team match was held instead to determine a number one contender for the title. As a result of that match, ODB is the new number one contender for the title.
  • Beer Money Inc. regained the tag team titles and Alex Shelley won the vacant X Division Championship.
