Brock Lesnar Wins UFC Heavyweight Championship

Sunday November 16, 2008
In only his fourth professional MMA fight, Brock Lesnar won the most prestigious title in the business. On Saturday night, Lesnar won the UFC Heavyweight Championship by beating UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture. During the second round of their title fight, Brock landed a huge right hand to the champion that caused him to fall to the mat. Brock then pounced on Couture and started to pummel him with his fists when the referee stopped the battle.

Brock Lesnar, a former NCAA Wrestling Champion, came to fame during his two year tenure with the WWE. During that time he was a dominant force in the company that won his first WWE Championship a few months after debuting with the company in 2002 by beating The Rock. He would go onto win the title two more times by beating Kurt Angle, a real life Olympic Gold Medalist. After leaving the company following his match against Goldberg at WrestleMania XX, he tried out for the Minnesota Vikings. After being cut by the team, Brock set his sights on the world of MMA.

He made his MMA debut in 2007 by beating Min Soo Kim. In February, he stepped into the UFC Octagon for the first time and lost to Frank Mir in the first round. He gained his first UFC victory in August when he beat Heath Herring.

Lesnar may get a chance to avenge his loss to Mir. Lesnar's next fight will be against the winner of the December 27 battle between UFC Interim Champion Antonio Rodrigo Noguiera and Frank Mir. Noguiera won his title by defeating Tim Sylvia when Randy Couture and the UFC were embroiled in a legal dispute. The winner of this future battle will be considered the undisputed champion.
