SummerSlam 2008 Predictions

Tuesday August 12, 2008
SummerSlam is just a few days away. The "Biggest Blockbuster of the Summer" has a different feel than any other PPV I can remember in quite sometime. Usually the title matches are the selling points of a PPV event but in this case they are just afterthoughts to the Hell in a Cell Match and the first-ever meeting of two of the WWE's top stars.

As is always the case with my predictions, you can let me know what you think will be happening at the show by clicking on the comments link at the bottom of this post. Please note that I am writing this post before the airing of the final episodes of ECW on SciFi and Friday Night SmackDown prior to this event. Since this site is non-spoiler, I ask that you do not mention anything in your comments about what occurred at the tapings of those shows until they air. I will update the blog on Friday night if there are any new matches added to this show.

Jeff Hardy vs. MVP - With MVP having lost his feud to Matt Hardy, I can't see him beating the more popular Hardy brother. I also don't think that this will be the last time we see these two men face off against each other. I believe next month we will be seeing Shelton Benjamin added to this feud and the US Title being on the line. Predicted Winner: Jeff Hardy

Winners Take All: Intercontinental Champion Kofi Kingston & Women's Champion Mickie James vs. Santino Marella & Beth Phoenix - I have really been enjoying the interaction between Santino and Beth. This bizarre romance needs to continue and the best way to keep the love flowing is for the couple to win these two titles. I would love to see this one end with Santino pinning Mickie and then bragging about his victory to Beth for the next few weeks. Predicted Winner: Beth Phoenix & Santino Marella

ECW Championship: Champion Mark Henry vs. Matt Hardy - This is the first ECW title match I have been looking forward to since the days of Morrison vs. Punk. I really like Mark in the championship role. It is a role that he hasn't had much experience in but he is really built for the part. I hate to say this, but I think that with Matt's recent history with the US Title that someone in the WWE feels that he makes a better challenger than a champion. Predicted Winner: Mark Henry

World Heavyweight Championship: Champion CM Punk vs. JBL - I like the way that the WWE is building CM Punk into a star for the future. He is not considered unbeatable yet but he is still a believable champion. I don't think that the WWE would ruin the momentum they are building with Punk by having him drop the title here. Predicted Winner: CM Punk

WWE Championship: Champion Triple H vs. The Great Khali - The only possible reason for the Great Khali getting this title shot is because the WWE doesn't want to waste a great championship match on a show where the title matches are in the background. Triple H will get the win and will be facing the winner of the Hell in a Cell Match next month. Predicted Winner: Triple H

Shawn Michael's Announcement - Shawn is supposed to announce whether or not he will retire. I don't think he will get a chance to. Chris Jericho and Lance Cade will stop Shawn's speech and beat him up.

Batista vs. John Cena - I can't believe that the WWE is blowing this opportunity. The first match between these men should be a main event at WrestleMania, not a throwaway match with very little build, animosity between the men, or a title on the line. When this match was first announced, I thought that it would end with Randy Orton returning to the ring and hitting the RKO on both men. However, Randy was just involved in a motorcycle accident that caused his collarbone to fracture again and he will be out of action for three more months. I still can't see this match ending with a clean finish. I see Kane interfering in this match to deny Batista a PPV victory for the second straight month. Speaking of Kane, that was quite a surprise he revealed on RAW. I never would have guessed that his bag contained the mask of Rey Mysterio. Predicted Winner: No contest

Hell in a Cell Match: The Undertaker vs. Edge - This match marks their fifth PPV main event this year. While they have all been entertaining matches, it is time for this feud to end. I expect for the Undertaker to win this match and the feud with a spectacular finish that we haven't seen in the Hell in a Cell. With the way that the Undertaker took a spectacular looking fall in his TLC match against Edge a few months ago, I'd expect for Edge to take a wild move that will force him to miss a few weeks worth of action. The Undertaker will look to reclaim a top championship belt that was stolen from him from Edge and Vickie. Edge will continue to be a part of the soap opera he has going on with Vickie Guerrero and La Familia. Predicted Winner: The Undertaker
