One Night Stand 2008 Recap and Results

Sunday June 1, 2008
Falls Count Anywhere Match: Umaga vs. Jeff Hardy - We got a unique tour of the San Diego Sports Arena as this battle went from the ring, through a corridor that went up steps that led to the walkway in the arena and out to the parking lot. Jeff used all the props available to him and did a cool looking move using the steps. He used his body like a skateboard and slid down the handrail to hit Umaga. Once outside of the building, the men smashed each other into several production trucks. The match ended when Jeff hit Umaga with a swanton bomb off the top of one of the trucks. Unfortunately, you couldn’t see the contact at the end of the move and the two were blocked out of the picture for a few seconds, including the three count. One can only assume they were clearing away the stunt padding at this point. Winner: Jeff Hardy

Singapore Cane Match: The Big Show vs. CM Punk vs. John Morrison vs. Chavo Guerrero vs. Tommy Dreamer - There is a Singapore Cane hanging from a pole on top of every corner of the ring. The match started with a 4-on-1 attack on the Big Show. When they finally got Big Show on the mat, all four men grabbed a cane and used it on the Big Show. The action then spread out between the competitors and went outside of the ring. When Chavo tried to hit CM Punk with the cane, he accidentally hit San Diego Charger Shawne Merriman with the cane. A few moments later, Shawne got his revenge by whacking Chavo with the cane. During the match, Big Show was tripped when he was carrying the steps. This bloodied him up. When he got back to his feet, he was enraged. He got hold of a garbage filled with canes and used them on his competitors and their seconds (Bam Neeley and the Miz). Big Show won the match by pinning Tommy Dreamer with one foot on his chest. As a result of this match, Big Show earned an ECW title shot against Kane at next month’s PPV, Night of Champions. Winner: The Big Show

First Blood Match: JBL vs. John Cena - This match featured a variety of weapons. A chair, microphone, the ring steps, the exposed turnbuckle, the ring post, the exposed ringside barricade, a chain, and a bullwhip all found their way into this match. The ending came when Cena was trapped in the ring ropes. JBL brought out a bullwhip and taunted Cena with it. However, he got to close to Cena and was hit with a low blow. Cena escaped from the ropes and used the chain when he applied the STFU. This causes JBL to bleed from the mouth. Winner: John Cena

- Randy Orton meets up with Batista in the back. Batista wants to know what Orton wants. Orton proposed that is they wind up together after the draft that they should team up again. Batista just walked away.

I Quit Match: Beth Phoenix vs. Melina - Beth Phoenix used a chin lock type submission maneuver to win this match. Unlike a usual chin lock, Beth crumpled up the body of Melina and seemingly bent her in-half while she was in the move. Winner: Beth Phoenix

- The continuing flirtation between John Cena and Mickie James continued but the two were broken up by Mike Adamle who had just used the rest room. A few jokes ensued between the three.

Stretcher Match: Shawn Michaels vs. Batista - After delivering a Batista Bomb, Batista put Shawn on the stretcher. Chris Jericho came out and encouraged Shawn to get up. Batista went back into the ring and Shawn crawled back in. He delivered the weakest imaginable super kick before falling to the ground. Batista picked him up and said “I don’t love you and I’m not sorry” before delivering another Batista Bomb. He put Shawn on the stretcher again but Chris Jericho blocked Batista from bringing it past the finish line. Jericho encouraged Shawn to get up. Shawn did and got slammed onto the ring steps for his effort. Batista then put Shawn on the stretcher and shoved it past the line. It appears that Batista kept his promise to hurt Shawn. Winner: Batista

Last Man Standing Match for the WWE Championship: Champion Triple H vs. Randy Orton - When Randy went for the RKO, Triple H reversed it and threw Orton over the top rope. Orton looked like he tried to grab the top rope and missed. He landed on the floor awkwardly and told the ref that he broke collarbone. Triple H broke up the 10-count. Randy got up a few times only to be hit by Triple H. The final time he got up, Triple H used the sledgehammer on Randy. This time, the referee counted to 10. After the match, medics came out to look at Randy. Randy looks like he was legitimately hurt. Winner: Triple H

TLC Match for the Vacant World Heavyweight Championship: The Undertaker vs. Edge - The Undertaker looked like he was going to win this match on three occasions. The first time he was stopped by Ryder and Hawkins. The second time, he was stopped by Chavo and Bam Neeley. When he finally dispatched of La Familigia, it looked like the Undertaker was going to win the title. However, Edge got up and tipped the ladder causing the Undertaker to crash through several tables set up outside of the ring. Edge climbed the ladder and grabbed the belt. By doing this, Edge won the vacant title and as per the rules of this match he also caused the Undertaker to be banished from the WWE. Winner and new champion: Edge

What does this event mean for the future?
This event closed the book on several main event feuds. Edge and the Undertaker had fought at the last four PPV events but with the Undertaker banished from the WWE, we shouldn’t be seeing a fifth straight PPV match between these men. The Triple H vs. Randy Orton feud also appears to be over, both due to the result of tonight’s match and the injury it looks like Randy suffered. The big question now is who will these men face at next month’s Night of Champions PPV? That will probably be determined by the draft that will be taking place in a few weeks.

Overall Thoughts
This was a fun show that brought conclusions to several feuds that had been going on for too long. Despite these feuds dragging on, they provided good matches and tonight was no exception. Without a doubt, this was the best of the three PPV events that the WWE has presented over the past 35 day.

Funny how the undertaker lost AND he’s on the “Night of the Champions” poster. Check wikipedia. Interesting no?

That poster means nothing. It keeps changing depending on the title situation. Here is another version of the poster on the In Demand site: http://www.indemand.com/product/view/84239

Note that in this poster Randy Orton is the WWE Champion and MVP is the US Champion.

So what will happen to the underteker? Is he moving to raw?

(6) prowrestling says:

According to the stipulations, he has been banned from all of the WWE not just SmackDown. That means that the he just can’t be moved to RAW.

As far as what will happen to him, I guess we’ll all have to wait and see how this story develops. I just hope that it doesn’t involve Leslie Nielsen trying to find him again

I saw this pay-per-view action last year, really of course The Undertaker came back into the wwe after three months. This feud between Batista And Shawn Michaels was ended up, Chris jericho threw some words to HBK Before he run out with the stretcher. What the shot Triple H gave orton with the trusty nasty sledgehammer, nailed him in the face but orton was the man who punt triple h in the head one year later, When big show starting to be so nervous, He kicked all his opponent’s asses as well. I don’t know why the bookers let cena to win with the ‘heels’, John Cena is the worstest wrestler ever! Quit cena quit! what the matches are we waiting for in this year’s one night stand PPV? Jeff Hardy vs Edge in a ladder match for the world title and the big show vs cena in a submission match, Batista vs randy orton in a steel cage match for the WWE Championship, Hoge pen match too will show up in extreme rules..
