Johnny Weaver 1935 - 2008

Friday February 15, 2008
I am terribly saddened to report that Johnny Weaver has passed away. Johnny is most famous for creating the sleeper hold. He was also married to former wrestler Penny Banner. His most recent angle on national TV was when he taught the Weaver Lock to Dusty Rhodes in 1987 to help him in his feud with Lex Luger. At the time of his passing, he was working for the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office in Charlotte, North Carolina.

He was the nicest man, and so funny. I worked with him for four years in the jail. He will be missed.

Sadly, it looks as though Penny will not be far behind.

For those that don’t know, Penny Banner has been battling cancer for several years. Earlier this week, there were reports floating on the net that her health has taken a turn for the worse. I try not to put much stock into reports floating on the net because they are usually right about 50% of the time and when they are right they usually contain some severe inaccuracies. In this case, I really hope that the reports are inaccurate.

Thanks for all the great memories, Johnny. I didn’t get to see you in main events here in Virginia, but always enjoyed your mid-card matches and your feud with Der Baron. :) Rest easy.

Truly a legend in the world of pro
wrestling. I remember his many
bouts with the Bolos with George
Becker as his partner. I will never
forget him.
