SummerSlam Recap
Kane vs. Finlay - Damaged ribs, a leprechaun trying to distract him, and multiple shillelaghs were not enough to stop Kane from hitting the choke slam on Finlay to get the win. Winner: Kane- Vince McMahon is in the locker room with the General Managers of all three brands. Santino Marella meets Vince and says that he may be his son because Vince is short for Vincenzo. MVP then enetered the locker room and issued an open challenge to Matt Hardy for a SummerSlam worthy event.
Intercontinental Championship: Champion Umaga vs. Carlito vs. Ken Kennedy - Despite the every man for himself rules, this match was a glorified handicap match that saw Kennedy and Carlito try their best to beat the “Samoan Bulldozer”. However, the constant double teaming was ineffective against Umaga who won the match by hitting the Samoan Spike on Kennedy. Winner: Umaga
- The Undertaker will be returning to the ring next month at Unforgiven.
Rey Mysterio vs. Chavo Guerrero - Rey made his return to the ring painted in silver in an attempt to look like the Silver Surfer. As was to be expected, Chavo targeted the knee of Rey which kept giving out on him. The third time proved to be the charm for Rey, as it took him three attempts to hit the 619. Once he hit it, it was just a matter of seconds before he won the match. Winner: Rey Mysterio
Diva Battle Royal - The battle royal came down to Beth Phoenix, Michelle McCool, and Torrie Wilson. “The Glamazon” Beth Phoenix easily dispatched of the two other Divas to earn a future title shot against Women’s Champion Candice Michelle. Winner: Beth Phoenix
- MVP came down to the ring and said that everyone in the audience bought their ticket to see him in action. He said that he would be willing to lower himself to the common man and challenged Matt Hardy to a beer drinking contest. Matt comes to the ring and says that since MVP picked Evander Holyfield as his substitute for his boxing match, Matt picked Steve Austin to be his substitute for the beer drinking contest. Just when the contest was about to start, Steve hit the Stone Cold Stunner on MVP and knocked him out. Austin celebrated with his traditional beer bash.
- Cryme Time thinks that Vince may be their dad and start dancing. William Regal joins in and is given the Damn by Ron Simmons.
ECW Championship: Champion John Morrison vs. CM Punk: - The third time didn’t prove to be the charm for CM Punk. For the third straight PPV event, John Morrison thwarted Punk’s chance to become the ECW Champion. Morrison put his feet on the ropes for added leverage to illegally get the pin. Winner: John Morrison
Triple H vs. King Booker - There must be a glitch in the matrix because I am experiencing déjà vu. Just like the return of Rey, it took Triple H three times before he was finally able to hit his finishing maneuver. King Booker was unable to kick out of the pedigree. By the way, while it is obvious that the crowd was going nuts, the sound did not come across well on this telecast. I don’t know if it is the way that the microphones were set up or if it is just the acoustics of the building. Having been to a few concerts at the arena, I think it is the poor acoustics of the arena. Winner: Triple H
World Heavyweight Championship Match: Champion The Great Khali vs. Batista - Maybe I was wrong about the acoustics because the crowd was chanting boring really loudly. At one point, the crowd tried to start the wave. Khali dominated the match and had Batista nearly beaten when for some reason Khali used a chair and got disqualified. Winner: Batista by DQ
- Mae Young wants to have a relationship with Vince and be the mother of his future love child. Mae then assaults Vince with a kiss that requires several people to drag her off of him. Vince admits to liking it and says that “old chicken makes great soup.”
WWE Championship Match: Champion John Cena vs. Randy Orton - Cena entered the match with a head injury due to Randy giving him the RKO on a chair at Saturday Night’s Main Event. Randy targeted the head of Cena during this match and came close to winning the title. However, after kicking out of an RKO, Cena gave Randy the FU to get the victory. Winner: John Cena
What does this event mean for the future?
The next PPV is in three weeks and will be headlined by the return of the Undertaker. The WWE has to be concerned about their title situation on SmackDown because the fans are very unhappy watching the Great Khali in the main event scene. Their reaction to his match just might force the WWE to change their plans if they planned a lengthy title reign for the giant.
Overall Thoughts
This show was very poor until the Cena vs. Orton match. If this was an episode of RAW that was going up against a good Monday Night Football game, even I would have probably changed the channel by the middle of the show. Without a doubt, this is one of the worst SummerSlam events in the illustrious history of the show. If you missed this show and were thinking about ordering the replay, I would discourage you from doing so.
