SummerSlam Recap

Sunday August 20, 2006
Who were the winners and losers at the biggest party of the summer? Was the show worth $40? What do the events of tonight mean to the future of the WWE? How did I wind up with a free month of Showtime? In addition, for the first time since taking over this site almost a year ago, I finally reveal who my favorite wrestler is.

Rey Mysterio vs Chavo Guerrero - I bet you thought I would talk about the use of Vicki Guerrero in this match. I would have, but I was unable to see the match. You'd never know if from watching their commercials, but a bad rain storm can lead to a disruption of satellite service. Thankfully, my satellite was out for only this match. When I called DirecTV to complain, they wouldn't give me a free replay of the show but they did give me a free month of Showtime. Winner: Chavo Guerrero

ECW Title: Champ The Big Show vs Sabu - Sabu has been having some prop problems this week. What could have been a cool move off a table placed between the steps turned into a big mess when the table slid out from under Sabu. For the second time this week, Sabu was greeted with the "You F'd Up" chants. Winner: The Big Show with a choke slam through a table

Hulk Hogan vs Randy Orton - Hulk got the victory but with such a controversial ending that Randy can say that he got a three count on the legendary Hulkster. This was far from a great match but it is always nice to see the Hulkster after a long absence. Please note the emphasis on long. Winner: Hulk Hogan with the leg drop after Randy thought he had won the match

I Quit Match: Ric Flair vs Mick Foley - My favorite wrestler of all time is the "Nature Boy". In recent months, Ric has become the very thing he criticized Foley for being, a glorified stuntman. It is a shame that over the past year, Ric has been involved in what are by far the most extreme matches of his career. While I would never say that a wrestler should retire, I would like to see Ric take it a little easier in the ring. As far as Foley goes, at least he is smart enough to only put his body through this torture on a part time basis. Winner: Ric Flair when Foley quit to save Melina

World Title Match: Champ Booker T vs Batista - There were some timing issues with this match as the two men did not appear to be working well with each other. The most notable example of this was the screwed up Batista bomb after the match. Hopefully, the rematch will be better. Winner: Batista by DQ when Queen Sharmell interfered

D-Generation X vs Vince & Shane McMahon - Long time fans might remember a WCW match where Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage beat what appeared to be the entire WCW roster (the 4 Horsemen, the Dungeon of Doom, Zeus, and few other wrestlers). This is the WWE's answer to that match. D-Generation X won despite the interference of all five members of the Spirit Squad (Kenny/Mikey/Johnny/Nicky/Mitch), William Regal, Finlay, Ken Kennedy, Big Show, and Umaga. Winners: D-Generation X with the pedigree

WWE Title can Change Hands on DQ: Champ Edge vs John Cena - This match started very slowly as Edge tried to win this match by count out several times. After a slow start, the match got very interesting as it appeared that Cena might win on several occasions and that the DQ rule being waived was going to cost Edge the title. Winner: Edge after using a pair of brass knuckles

What does this event mean for future?
Nothing has been settled with the SmackDown! matches. Rey and Chavo will battle again as will Batista and King Booker. The ECW match looks like the end of the Sabu vs Big Show feud. That opens the door to a potential Kurt Angle or Rob Van Dam vs Big Show feud. On the RAW side of things, hopefully the D-Generation X vs McMahon family feud is over as well as the Edge vs Cena feud. The ending of the D-Generation X match will likely lead to a Kane vs Umaga feud.

Overall Thoughts
Like the past few SummerSlam events, the show was pretty good but relatively forgettable with nothing of note happening.
