Judgment Day Recap

Sunday May 21, 2006
On paper this show looked like one of the worst PPV events in WWE history. In a total shocker, this might wind up being the best event of the year. This show featured the worst night of the career of a certain WWE Diva, the crowning of a new King of the Ring, a WWE icon being dominated, Rey Mysterio’s best match since winning the title and the break up of one of the best WWE factions in recent SmackDown! history.

WWE Tag Team Titles: Champs MNM (Joey Mercury & Johnny Nitro) w/Melina vs Paul London & Brian Kendrick - Nitro was holding London when Mercury went to hit London. London moved and Mercury accidentally hit his partner who fell into Melina. London then rolled up Mercury to win the tag team titles for his team. After the match, Melina started to yell at Mercury and then slaps him. When Mercury went to attack Melina, Nitro attacked Mercury. Security and Teddy Long had to come out to break up the fight between the former partners. Winners: Kendrick & London

Chris Benoit vs Finlay - After 20 minutes of battling, Benoit reverses a suplex attempt and turns it into a crippler cross face. Finlay tapped out to end a really good old school style match. Winner: Chris Benoit

Jillian Hall vs Melina w/Johnny Nitro - Before the match starts, the ref makes Nitro go to the back. The match ends when Melina charges the corner and Jillian hits a sunset flip to get the win. The ref did not see that Melina was touching the ropes. An angry Melina was then confronted by SmackDown! announcer Kristal that mentioned that Melina was having a bad night. The two ladies then proceeded to have a cat fight that was broken up by WWE officials. Winner: Jillian Hall

- JBL is being interviewed in the back when Chavo Guerrero makes a surprise appearance. Chavo tells JBL to stop living in the past and gives the crowd a “Viva la Razza” to end the segment.

Cruiserweight Title: Champ Gregory Helms vs Super Crazy - This PPV is off to a great start and this match was a great 10 minute cruiserweight style battle. The match ends when Super Crazy went for huricarrana but Helms reversed it into a power bomb. Helms then used the ropes for leverage to get the win. Winner: Gregory Helms

- Melina and Nitro are in Teddy Long’s office. Melina is upset how her night is going and she slaps Teddy. Teddy then fires both Melina and Nitro.

Kurt Angle vs Mark Henry - When the action spills out of the ring, Henry delivers a splash to Angle against the ring post. Henry makes it back into the ring before the ref finishes his count to win by count out. After the match, Kurt flipped out and destroyed Mark with a chair and delivered the ankle lock and angle slam on the announcers table. Winner: Mark Henry

King of the Ring Finals: Booker T w/Sharmell vs Lashley - Booker T hit both the book end and the scissor kick on Lashley but could not put his opponent away. Lashley hit the spear but the ref was distracted by Sharmell. Finlay entered the ring and hit Lashley with the shillelagh. Booker then hit the scissor kick to get the win. When Booker put on his cape and crown, he was speared into his throne by Lashley. Winner: Booker T

The Undertaker vs The Great Kahli w/Daivari - The amazing streak for The Great Kahli continues as he soundly and cleanly beat The Undertaker. When The Undertaker went for the choke slam, The Great Kahli broke free from it and delivered chop to the head and kick combination. He then pinned The Undertaker by placing one foot on his chest. The crowd went silent after witnessing the demolition of The Undertaker. Winner: The Great Kahli

World Heavyweight Championship: Champ Rey Mysterio vs JBL - Unlike the past few weeks, Rey gets off to a fast start. JBL eventually recovers and bloodies up Rey. He then mocks the legacy of Eddie Guerrero by doing the three amigos to Rey. Outside the ring, JBL taunts Rey’s wife by shoving a bloody Rey in front of her face. Rey regains the advantage and hits the 619. He tries to follow it up with the west coast pop but JBL puts the referee in the path of the move. JBL then knocks out a second referee and gets a chair. Myserio kicks the chair into JBL’s face and hits the 619 followed by and Eddie Guerrero style frog splash to get the win. After the match, Chavo Guerrero comes out to celebrate with Rey as the fans chant Eddie. Winner: Rey Mysterio

Thanks for covering wrestling so well and so frequently. Most online wrestling columns are rife with cynicism and bad grammar. Yours is a breath of fresh air.

Check out my blog. I promise it’s a good read If it helps, I’ve graduated with a degree in print journalism.

Thank you for the kind words. I decided to do this site because of all the cynicsm of the other sites. My wish is that people see this site as an alternative to all the negative sites on the net. As far as the grammar goes, I have to keep up with the standards set forth by The New York Times. If my grammar was as bad as many of the other wrestling sites, I would never have been hired.

For some reason your blog address didn’t appear in your post. Here it is:
