3/31 Friday Night SmackDown! Recap

Friday March 31, 2006
Tonight’s show was a build up to Sunday’s big show. The main event featured Kurt Angle battle Rey Mysterio because Rey wanted to prove to everyone that he belonged in the main event on Sunday night (Angle vs Mysterio vs Randy Orton). Based on his performance tonight, he doesn’t. Rey has now lost cleanly in the past month to both of his WrestleMania opponents while Kurt Angle made both of his opponents tap out tonight. As far as who I think will win the big match on Sunday, my prediction is that if the SmackDown! main event is the final match of the evening, then Rey will be walking out of WrestleMania with the title. The last 5 men to win the Royal Rumble have won the title at WrestleMania and this would make it 6.

- The show starts ff with a verbal battle between the three main eventers at WrestleMania 22, Kurt Angle, Rey Mysterio, & Randy Orton. Teddy Long comes out to stop this and somehow Randy Orton was able to talk them all into agreeing to make tonight’s main event Kurt Angle vs Rey Mysterio because Rey wanted to prove that he belongs in the main event. Randy was then ordered out of the arena by Teddy Long.

Chris Benoit vs. Animal - Animal grabs the mic and complains about not being at WrestleMania. After a few minutes, Animal tries to hit Benoit with the brass knuckles but Benoit reverses it into the crippler cross face to get the win via submission. Winner: Chris Benoit

- In the back, Benoit bumps into JBL. JBL says that he won the WWE title from Beniot’s friend Edde Guerrero and he will take the U.S. title from another great technical wrestler. Benoit replies that it is good that JBL’s hand is cured because he will need it to tap out on Sunday.

JBL vs Daniel Cross - I think that the only reason for this match is to show the fans that JBL’s hand is healed enough for him to wrestle on Sunday. JBL hits the clothesline from hell to get the win in less than a minute. Winner: JBL

- A video featuring The Miz at WWE headquarters is shown. For fans that do not recognize him, he was a contestant on last year’s Tough Enough competition. For the record, there are 0 competitors from any season of Tough Enough that will be appearing at WrestleMania 22.

Booker T w/Sharmell vs Paul Birchill - Booker T gets to battle the freaks this week as he is fighting a pirate this week. During the match, The Boogey Man came out and kidnapped Sharmell. Booker runs after his wife and gets counted out. Just like the NBA player earlier this season proved, if you leave the part of the arena you should be in to protect your wife, you will be penalized. Winner: Paul Birchill by count out

MNM & Finlay vs Lashley, Matt Hardy & Tatanka - On Sunday night, Finlay, Lashley, and Matt will be battling each other plus 3 RAW stars in the Money in the Bank. This one ends when Matt Hardy used the twist of fate to get the win for his team. Winners: Lashley, Matt Hardy, & Tatanka

- Mark Henry holds a funeral for The Undertaker’s soon to end WrestleMania winning streak. He rattles off the names of all The Undertakers opponents (Jimmy Snuka, Jake Roberts, Giant Gonzalez, King Kong Bundy, Diesel, Sid, Kane (twice), Big Bossman, Triple H, Ric Flair, Big Show, A-Train, & Randy Orton). The Undertaker does not make any appearances or have any spooky effects play over the arena’s PA like he normally would do in such a situation.

The Mexicools vs Kid Kash & Jamie Knoble - This match has no implications for this weekends events which makes me wonder why it is on at this point of the show. Super Crazy hits an impressive superplex type move off the top rope on Kid Kash to get the win. Winners: The Mexicools

- Booker T is following a trail of worms to find his wife. She is in a room with millions of worms. He rescues her while The Boogey Man is laughing in the background. This is reminiscent of when Jake Roberts locked The Ultimate Warrior in the snake room many years ago.

Non-title Match: Kurt Angle vs Rey Mysterio - These two men had some great matches a few years ago and this match continues that tradition. This one ends when Rey goes for the 619 and Angle grabs his legs and applies the ankle lock to get the win. After the match, Randy Orton hits Rey with the 619. Angle and Orton start to fight and this ends with Randy having to tap out to the ankle lock. Winner: Kurt Angle
