Saturday Night’s Main Event Recap

Saturday Night’s Main Event aired for the first time in over a decade and it is amazing how much the wrestling business has changed. Steve Austin had to be bleeped twice, Mick Foley had thumbtacks in his head, one of the female wrestlers is in Playboy, and one of the matches featured tables, ladders, chairs, and canes. The only constant from the final edition of Saturday Night’s Main Event is Shawn Michaels being in the best match of the night. Another constant over the past decade is the Montreal Screwjob rearing its ugly head.
- The announcers for this event are Jim Ross, Jerry Lawler & Tazz.
Triple H & John Cena vs Kurt Angle, Randy Orton, & Rey Mysterio - Early in the match, Triple H saved his partner from a 619. However later in the match, when Cena tried to pin Orton after delivering the FU, Triple H gave Cena the pedigree. Teamwork wasn’t a high priority on the SmackDown! side either. Orton delivered the RKO to Kurt Angle after Triple H hit the pedigree on Rey Mysterio. Triple H headed towards the back when Cena reversed an RKO attempt and rolled up Orton for the 3 count. Winners: John Cena & Triple H
- Booker T & Sharmell are in the back with SmackDown! GM Teddy Long and a doctor. Booker complains that he hurt his knees while running the steps to work out. Teddy Long decides to cancel the match.
- The Cutting Edge with Mick Foley - The segment starts with Edge & Lita insulting Foley. When Foley comes out, he is ready to fight. Edge sets a table on fire to show that he is now the hardore icon. The two men fight and Mick Foley opens his bag of thumbtacks. When Edge is about to fall into the thumbtacks, Lita hits Mick with a chair and Edge throws him face first into the thumb tacks. The thumbtacks stuck in his face barely bother Foley as he beats up Edge and delivers the con-chair-to to Edge on the ramp as payback for what happened a few weeks ago.
- Booker T just got out of the shower and is laughing with his wife about faking out the doctor. The lights turn red and The Boogey Man mysteriously appears. Booker & Sharmell run out of the locker room.
- Beer Drinking Contest: Steve Austin vs JBL - JBL comes to the ring first and insults Detroit until Austin comes out. Austin does his typical speech and has to be bleeped out twice. JBL makes the rules of this and demands that they stand back to back and drink as much beer as they can in one minute. When the contest starts, JBL doesn’t drink his beer, he just empties the beer all over himself. Steve catches JBL cheating. JBL throws a cup of beer into Austin’s face and runs out of the ring. Chris Benoit comes out and throws JBL (his WrestleMania opponent) back into the ring. Austin then douses JBL with several pitchers of beer before delivering the Stone Cold Stunner.
Trish Stratus & Mickey James vs Candice Michelle & Victoria - Trish easily wins this match for her team by hitting the Stratusfaction on Victoria. After the match, Mickie (who was never in the match) says that she wants to say goodbye to Trish the right way. She offers to shake Trish’s hand and when Trish accepts, Mickie then tries to hug and kiss her. Trish rebukes these attempts and Mickie responds by hitting Trish with her own two signature moves, the chick kick and the Stratusfaction. Winners: Trish Stratus & Mickie James
- Mark Henry comes out to the ring to call out The Undertaker. The druids come out with a coffin. The Undertaker follows them to the ring. The two men start to fight. The brawl ends with Mark Henry’s manager, Daivari, receiving the Tombstone.
Street Fight: Shawn Michaels vs Shane McMahon w/Vince McMahon - Like all good street fights, it didn’t take long for the match to go outside the ring and the combatants to start using tables, ladders, and chairs. The show went to a commercial break after Shawn hit a superplex off the top of a ladder through the tables set up outside the ring. The violence continues when the show comes back from break and features Vince McMahon hit Shane with a Singapore cane. Later in the match, Shane misses the Van Terminator and winds up hitting Vince with the garbage can. Shawn gets his second wind and hits the sweet chin music. As the ref is about to hit the mat for the third time, Vince drags him out of the ring. Shawn drags Vince into the ring and is about to hit him when Shane hits him in the groin. Shane applies the sharpshooter and just like in Montreal at the Survivor Series 97, Vince calls for the ref to ring the bell and demands that Lillian declare his son the winner by submission. Winner: Shane McMahon
